Necessary Accessories: Collar Stays

Usually when you buy a shirt, they come with plastic stiffeners pre-fitted. The trouble is, they’re flimsy, don’t keep your collars straight and if you forget to remove them, they’ll melt in the wash. Some places like Charles Tyrwhitt actually provide brass stiffeners as standard but they’re still a little flimsy for my liking.

So, what’s a man to do? You can buy this handy set of sturdy metal collar stays in varying sizes for a range of different collars. Brooks Brothers are a reputable brand and the leather carry case is a nice touch which adds a touch of luxe. They’re pricey though and 9 pairs of collar stays is probably overkill.

Then there’s this set from John Lewis. At £10 for two pairs, they’re good value although I’m not a fan of “comedy” accessories.

What I’d recommend, is going on Etsy and picking up a pair or two in varying sizes according to how big your collars are. Firstly, you’re supporting a small business, which is always worthwhile and secondly, you can get them personalised. Dressing well is often about the little touches and fine details. Nobody will see your personalised collar stays but you’ll know they’re there: your own unique accessories.

My sister bought me a pair of personalised collar stays years ago and they have a huge sentimental importance. In fact, they’re now the only ones I wear, so a personalised pair also makes a great gift for the men in your life.

As for the benefits of a sturdy pair of collar stays, see below for a shirt with and without them.

As you can see, they’re a necessary accessory. Just don’t forget to remove them before you do your laundry!

Terry
